Strong – Queensland economy

• Population Growth Highlights and Trends, Queensland is a new report presenting information on Queensland’s population growth with analysis at the state, regional and local levels.
• Measures of Australia's Progress (MAP) 2010 presents a suite of indicators to help Australians determine whether life in Australia is getting better.
• Queensland Economic Review is a monthly publication featuring analysis and commentary on selected economic and financial indicators relating to the international, national and Queensland economies.
• Labour Force is a monthly publication that summarises and compares the monthly trends in employment and the labour supply for Queensland and Australia.  Data is generated from the monthly ABS publication, Labour Force: Australia Preliminary, Cat. no. 6202.0.
• Queensland State Accounts is a quarterly report that measures the structure and performance of the Queensland economy.
• Global Food Security facts, issues and implications (PDF, 1.60 MB) discusses various challenges facing Australia for food security including availability of resources, climate change and productivity.
• Meeting infrastructure needs in Australia is an OECD report that considers the need for adequate and well functioning infrastructure for growth and well-being.

Strong - Business innovation

• Queensland research and development investment strategy 2010-2020
• Innovation in Australian Business presents information about the incidence of innovation in Australian business. It reports data as collected by the 2006-07 Business Characteristics Survey (BCS).
• Queensland Economic Review is a monthly update produced by Queensland Treasury that provides updates on Queensland’s economic performance.
• Attractiveness for innovation is an OECD report analysing the current trends in international investment in innovation.

Green - Carbon footprint

• National Greenhouse Accounts is a comprehensive report on national greenhouse gas emissions used to meet Australia’s reporting commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and track progress against Australia’s target under the Kyoto Protocol.  
• Climate Change in Queensland: What the Science is Telling Us 2010 (PDF, 4.6 MB) outlines the current state of knowledge on climate change and provides detailed information on its impacts for Queensland.
• Office of Climate Change progress report (PDF, 286 KB) released in April 2010 provides an overview on the progress of the 124 key actions and initiatives contained in Queensland's three climate change strategies:

  • ClimateSmart 2050 (PDF, 720 KB)
  • ClimateSmart Adaptation 2007-12 (PDF, 665 KB)

Queensland's climate change response includes the most comprehensive suite of initiatives of any Australian jurisdiction. Our policy response on climate change has set the bar for state-based approaches that complement national action. It also charts a clear framework for action across key sectors that will help the state respond and adapt to climate change.

• The Queensland Parliament Environment and Resources Committee Report on Growing Queensland’s Renewable Energy Sector examines opportunities to grow a stronger renewable electricity generation sector.
• The Next Generation Planning Handbook contains guidelines for housing and neighbourhood design for South East Queensland that will encourage housing diversity and affordable living. This handbook will help councils accommodate future growth while maintaining character, lifestyle and affordability
• The Transit Orientated Development Guidelines: a guide for practitioners in Queensland outlines the principles of transit oriented development (TOD) and encourages application of those principles throughout Queensland. TODs can encourage a much smaller carbon footprint through reducing motor vehicle use  and providing high quality, easily accessible public transport services.
• Subtropical Design in Southeast Queensland: A Handbook for Planners, Developers, and Decision Makers provides practical guidance to planners, developers and decision makers to understand and adapt the subtropical design principles to develop low-energy urban form and low-energy buildings.

Green - Greenspace

• The Australian Government is reviewing its Caring for Our Country initiative. Under Caring for our Country, the government is investing $2 billion over five years. The long term objective of the initiative is to achieve an environment that is healthy, better protected, well-managed, resilient, and provides essential ecosystem services in a changing climate.
• State of Scotland Greenspace 2009 provides information on the extent of urban greenspace in Scotland including the different types of greenspace and local authority work on greenspace audits and targets.
• The results of the 2010 Queensland Outdoor Recreation Survey provide information on the outdoor recreation industry, areas requiring assistance and trend data. The survey is based on responses from 121 representatives of the outdoor recreation sector.
• The 2010 outdoor recreation participation report is a unique study tracking participation trends in outdoor recreation in the USA. The study is based on the responses of more than 40,000 Americans and covers 114 different activities.
• Australian forests at a glance (PDF, 17MB) contains up-to-date facts and figures about our forests and their management.

• A Flying Start for Queensland Children (PDF, 1 MB) is a discussion paper on the future of education as part of the Queensland Government's plan to provide all Queensland children with a flying start in life.
• The Early Years: foundations for life, health and learning (The Tickell review) (PDF, 1.75MB) is a report from the Department of Education (UK) indentifying the key areas of influence on children's early development for laying the foundation for life, health and learning.
• Growing up in Australia the longitudinal study of Australian children: 2009-10 annual report (PDF, 1.24MB) provides an overview of the mid-wave 3.5's preliminary findings (ages 5-6 and 9-10 years old) and covers topics of schooling, health, and the use of technology.

Smart - Training and qualifications

• The vocational education and training workforce research report provides information on the challenges and opportunities facing the vocational education and training (VET) sector.
• Lifting the quality of teaching and learning in higher education is a paper produced by the Business Council of Australia discussing priorities to ensure Australia's higher education sector is contributing to lifting national productivity.
• The national partnership agreement on literacy and numeracy: performance report for 2010 (PDF, 1.24MB) provides an assessment of the achievement against targets agreed between Commonwealth, states and territories. This five year national partnership aims to deliver sustained improvements in literacy and numeracy for students.

Healthy - Preventable diseases

• The Health of Queenslanders report 2010 provides information on the health status of Queenslanders and the challenges we face in making Queenslanders Australia's healthiest people.
• The Assessing Cost-Effectiveness in Prevention report is a world first study from the University of Queensland evaluating the cost-effectiveness of 150 preventive health measures.
• The Range and Magnitude of Alcohol's Harm to Others' report is a new report from the Australian Education and Rehabilitation Foundation. This report identifies that alcohol abuse costs Australia $36 billion a year.

• Australian hospital statistics 2009-10 presents a detailed overview of Australia's 1,326 public and private hospitals.
• World health statistics 2011 is the World Health Organisation's annual compilation of health-related data for its 193 Member States, and includes a summary of the progress made towards achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and associated targets.
• Health care systems: getting more value for money (PDF, 867KB) is an OECD report identifying new comparative data on health policies and health care system efficiencies for its member countries.
• Queensland Health hospital performance website contains detailed, up-to-date and regular information on the activity and performance of Queensland Health's reporting hospitals.

Fair - Jobless households

• Employment Target Brief April 2010 (PDF, 33 KB) provides an update on Queensland’s progress toward the jobs target.
• Doing better for Families published by the OECD investigates the different ways that governments are supporting families and discusses critical challenges such as fertility rates, population ageing, and poverty.
• Enhancing labour utilisation in a socially inclusive Australia published by the OECD discusses the challenges of boosting labour supply and promoting social inclusion.
• The problem of social housing stigmatisation and innovations that can minimise its effects (Investigative Panel) is a report by the Australian Housing and urban research institute presenting the findings from a panel investigation established to consider the impact of stigma for social housing residents and the policies that can be deployed to mitigate its effects.

• The World Giving Index 2010 (PDF, 1 MB) is a new report from the Charities Aid Foundation.  It is the first report of its kind looking at charitable behaviour across the world. The report looked at three different types of charitable behaviour – donating money, volunteering time for an organisation and helping a stranger. Australia and New Zealand have currently topped the Index.
