"Today the countdown to Queensland's 150th birthday begins. 150 sleeps until we wake up on the birthday of this great State of Australia. 150 years ago we saw Queensland separate from New South Wales. Over the twelve months of our 150th birthday, no matter where you live in Queensland, I want people to feel as though the celebrations have come to their town, to their city, to their little part of our great State."

"A century ago, as the fathers of the federation shaped the constitution, the preservation and protection of the states was pivotal to their deliberations. And yet today there seems a headlong, popular rush to abandon them... So, a century on from federation, against a backdrop of an emerging cooperative federalism and fresh from a meeting of the Council of Australian Governments, I thought it would be useful today to reflect on federalism as a form of government and contemplate the future of our own federation."
