2018 Commonwealth Games
We did it, Queensland! We won the right to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. After a tough contest and a nerve-wracking vote, our united community welcomes these games.
From April 4 to 15, 2018, the Gold Coast will host the best-ever Commonwealth Games. It will be a unique, world-class and friendly event that builds on the Commonwealth brand and enhances our city's reputation.

Events will be held at venues on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville. Find out more about where events will be hosted.
Our sports program will be the best under the sun, and offer a unique opportunity to showcase the Commonwealth’s sporting abilities to the world. The program of core sports includes Athletics, Aquatics, Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Squash, Rugby 7's and Weightlifting. The host city may select up to a further seven sports from a list of sports – we’ve chosen Basketball, Shooting, Table Tennis, Cycling, Gymnastics, Triathlon and Wrestling.
The Games are expected to generate up to $2 billion economic benefit, with up to 30,000 full time equivalent jobs created over five years. Over $500 million will now be invested in sport and transport infrastructure.
The Gold Coast will be transformed with new infrastructure, renewed tourism opportunities and a buzz that only a big international event like this can bring.
The successful bid also acts as a catalyst to fast-track infrastructure development, including:
- Increasing the capacity of Metricon stadium from 25,000 to 40,000 seats
- New badminton and mountain bike facilities
- A world class squash complex
- Development of the Coomera Sports and Leisure Centre
- Upgrades to the Broadbeach Bowls Club, Gold Coast Hockey Centre and the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.
A new Health and Knowledge precinct, adjacent to the $1.76 billion Gold Coast University Hospital, will also be developed.
