    Queensland's action plan for health

In 2005 the Queensland Government announced its Health Action Plan to address the challenge of providing better health services for Queenslanders.

The action plan, along with the biggest funding injection in this state's history, started the reform and renewal of the public health system.

    Reaching the action plan targets

In August 2008 the Queensland government released Advancing Health Action which discusses the challenges we face in making Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest people.

Advancing Health Action outlines the five key challenges facing Queensland and how the government, together with the community, intends to reach our health targets.

    Action plan achievements

Some of the key improvements the action plan has delivered so far include:

    • providing more doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, resulting in safer and more sustainable health services
    • steadily increased hospital bed numbers and making good progress on the new Queensland Children’s Hospital and planning for two more new hospitals
    • establishing the 13HEALTH hotline, which connects patients to trained, experienced health professionals who give advice about the health care required
    • investing an extra $243 million over four years to implement the health Strategy to further improve the quality and safety of services for patients
    • establishing the Health Quality and Complaints Commission
    • securing new funding from airport sales to invest in a major expansion and redevelopment of Cairns, Mackay and Mount Isa Hospitals.

Regulation of junk food advertising on children’s television

To support healthier choices for families, the Queensland Government recently asked Queenslanders for their views about the restriction of junk food advertising. Findings suggest the vast majority of parents support stronger restrictions on all television junk food advertising, particularly during the broadcasting of children’s programs.
