    Queensland's 2020 forum

In May 2008 Premier Anna Bligh hosted the Queensland 2020: Ideas to Action Forum.

The forum was held to build on the success of the Canberra 2020 Summit and Queensland's 2020 Forum, both held in April 2008.

At the Ideas to Action forum, more than 100 attendees discussed which ideas could be adopted in Queensland to meet our specific challenges. These ideas were published in the Queensland 2020 Ideas to Action Forum Report.

The Queensland Government has responded to the ideas generated at the forum with its Queensland 2020: Ideas to Action Queensland Government Response.

The report provides the Queensland Government's response to each of the 72 initiatives and proposals listed under the ‘Key Ideas’ sections of the Queensland 2020: Ideas to Action Forum Report.

Of the 72 ideas discussed at the Ideas to Action forum, the Queensland Government accepted 69 ideas in full or in principle. A further idea was accepted in part.

The Queensland Government will work with 2020 delegates and other stakeholders to turn these ideas into reality.

Many of the ideas discussed at the Ideas to Action Forum will help Queenslanders to work together to realise the ambitions set out in Toward Q2.

    Read the forum report:

Ideas discussed at the Ideas to Action session included:

    • digitisation of major art and cultural collections to share Queensland traditions and culture within the state and with the world
    • automatic enrolment of voters on reaching 18 years
    • developing consistent business regulation across the states
    • greater community use of community assets, such as schools
    • consultation on development of a Preamble to Queensland Constitution, recognising the historical role of traditional owners
    • setting up a Golden Gurus database to link senior citizen business mentors with career debutantes.

An example where the Bligh Government has already pursued delegates' ideas is the ‘opt-out’ system for organ donors. Queenslander Janelle Colquhoun's idea for a new approach to organ donation has been the catalyst for a review of the state's organ donation system.

Other examples where the Bligh Government intends to pursue further investigation and discussion include:

    • in governance, the ground-breaking Freedom Of Information review, which will put Queensland at the national forefront of promoting continuing new standards of open and accountable government
    • directing productivity gains to benefits in early childhood education. Gains made by Premier Bligh's call for a nationally-consistent education curriculum must be returned to education
    • in health, working harder to develop better strategies for prevention and early detection of the likes of diabetes and heart diseases; and working in an even more unified way to make sure hospital and health care services meet future needs
    • on climate change, looking more creatively to support green alternatives to provide other sources of power, like solar and geothermal power.

Attendees at the Ideas to Action forum also attended the initial Queensland 2020 forum, which was held on 13 April 2008. The initial forum was scheduled prior to the national 2020 summit held in Canberra.
